Hostel Selina Oaxaca

I really enjoyed my stay, I was there for the Semana de los Muertos. The hostel architecture and deco is very nice. The view from the terrace is awesome and they offer very good and cheap coffee, and a great menu for breakfast. Rooms were comfy and quiet. And the cowork, I went everyday, is also quiet and had good spots for focus. They also offer coffee. Receptionists were very helpful and kind.

I spent three nights at this hostel during my trip. Unfortunately, I fell ill on the day of my arrival and opted to upgrade from the dorm I had originally booked to a single bed room for two nights. The reception staff were exceedingly courteous and helpful throughout my stay. However, I was disappointed by the state of the bathrooms. While I understand that water scarcity might be a challenge in Oaxaca, the shared bathrooms in the hotel were consistently unclean and unsanitary, exacerbating my illness. The common bathrooms exhibited some common issues, perhaps due to water scarcity, which led to poor hygiene conditions. One noticeable problem was the prohibition of flushing toilet paper, resulting in a collection of used toilet papers emitting a distressing odor. Moreover, the insufficient water pressure in the flush made it extremely difficult to properly dispose of waste after each use. On each visit to the bathroom, I found myself waiting around 10 minutes for the toilet tank to refill before attempting to flush. Despite my efforts to flush multiple times after each use, the toilets remained problematic. It was disheartening to encounter remnants of others' use when attempting to utilize the facilities in the morning. Additionally, the hotel failed to provide shower gel and shampoo in the shared bathrooms, adding to the inconvenience. Beyond this significant concern, it's important to be prepared for loud music emanating from the rooftop bar during weekends. Though I was unwell during my initial two nights and thus did not partake, my curiosity got the better of me on my last day. To my surprise, despite the booming music, the rooftop bar was nearly empty, with only the DJ and a handful of staff present.

Had an excellent stay here during Gualegetza. It’s a more quiet Selina location, but still somewhat of a social scene around. The rooftop restaurant was my favorite part of my stay. And in fact, though I didn’t stay at the Selina for my whole trip to Oaxaca, I came back repeatedly for the breakfast. Very friendly staff and clean spot.

Selina is an exceptionally clean hotel/ hostel with comfortable beds and an ambiance befitting old-town Oaxaca. The dorms and some of the private rooms utilize shared bathrooms. The staff is friendly and helpful. It's two or three blocks from the Zócalo. Prospective guests need to keep in mind two things: the property does not have an elevator, and you'll need to bring your own soap and shampoo. I would stay here again.

Not a good experience...the "security guard" is completely unhinged - absolutely mad behaviours by said individual. At around 11pm the night of my arrival, he came galloping over to me at a workspace as if I was implementing a global meltdown and frantically started relocating me to another place. The following morning I was up at 6:45am and minding my own business when my phone for literally seconds started playing a YouTube video full volume. Within a few more seconds before I could mute it, the same guy comes charging over (it's not that early....almost 7am in a hostel?) and literally looses his mind! I've nevrr experienced behaviours like this by staff...this guy in particular treats the place like it's his own personal echo chamber and that it's a privilege for you to be there! Aside from the above, the place is really nice, so the latter is a shame and the desk staff were friendly. The room, however, had no windows and though fine, wasn't as good as other Selinas.
